6.0b1   DMG ZIP

Important: PDFify 6.0 requires macOS 12 Monterey or later. It does not start on macOS 10.13 to 11. If your Mac runs one of these systems, please skip this update and stay with PDFify 5.2.

PDFify 6.0 is the biggest update in years: a modern document window, automatic straightening of crooked scans and photos, one page per receipt straight from the scanner, and more accurate text recognition.

  • inf PDFify now requires macOS 12 Monterey or later.
  • new A redesigned document window with a page sidebar you can resize, collapse and show or hide from the toolbar.
  • new "Straighten Pages" in the Pages menu puts crooked pages right. Photographed sheets are lifted out of the picture and laid flat, crooked scans are turned straight and lose the dark scanner border. Text stays text, so searchable documents stay searchable, and pages that are already straight are left alone.
  • new Crooked scans are straightened automatically, and the scanner lid around them is cut away. You can turn this off in the scanner window.
  • new Lay several receipts on the scanner at once and get one clean, straight page per receipt. Switch it on in the scanner window under "Separate documents". A single receipt is cropped the same way, and a card lying sideways is turned the right way up.
  • new The new "Grayscale (keep text)" compression turns color documents into compact gray copies while all text stays searchable and selectable. Ideal for archives.
  • new If PDFify ever stops responding, it offers on the next launch to tell us what happened. Nothing is sent without your consent.
  • upd Text recognition is more accurate: language correction is on by default, and macOS 15 and later use Apple's newer recognition.
  • upd The toolbar is more compact, uses the system symbols and leaves more room for your document.
  • upd "Straighten Pages" starts right away, shows its progress page by page and can be canceled at any time.
  • upd The scanner window recognizes an attached ScanSnap by itself, even without the manufacturer's software.
  • upd Emails and web pages are converted with the current rendering engine and look just like they do in a browser.
  • upd Importing emails with unusual character sets, deeply nested messages or damaged files is more robust.
  • upd Notifications use the current macOS system, collect in Notification Center and follow your notification settings.
  • upd Crash reports can be switched off with "Send Crash Reports" in the PDFify menu.
  • upd More privacy: support messages no longer include your settings file, and the log no longer contains your license key.
  • upd After a hang, the system report can go along with your message. On macOS 12 and 13 it is copied for the support page.
  • fix Pages scanned with the document feeder, single-sided or duplex, arrive in the order they were scanned.
  • fix iPhone photos (HEIC or JPEG) are imported the right way up instead of upside down or squeezed.
  • fix Dragging messages and attachments from Apple Mail into PDFify works reliably again.
  • fix Straightening and trimming are kept when you run text recognition or compression afterwards. The order of steps no longer matters, and undo takes any of them back.
  • fix Straightening no longer cuts a strip off one side of a photographed page. When the paper edge is uncertain, nothing is cut.
  • fix Page thumbnails show the straightened result instead of the previous version.
  • fix Text recognition no longer comes back empty right after installing PDFify or updating macOS, and it is ready sooner.
  • fix Text recognition reports pages without readable text and leaves them untouched instead of making the file bigger.
  • fix The alternative text recognition engine reads pages the right way up again.
  • fix Making a PDF searchable in the Finder tells you when no text could be recognized.
  • fix The App Store version keeps the last verified purchase when the App Store cannot be reached, instead of unlocking Pro.
  • fix Exporting as plain text no longer crashes on some documents.
  • fix The page sidebar no longer crashes when switching back to a document window.
  • fix "Support" in the Help menu works again on macOS 12 and 13.
  • fix The log file keeps the start of a session again, including app version and system.

5.2   DMG ZIP

  • new A completely redesigned scanner dialog on macOS 14 and later: choose source, color mode, resolution, and duplex, run a preview, and set the scan area - drag in the preview, type exact measurements in millimeters or inches, or pick a preset such as DIN A4 or US Letter (remembered per scanner). A compact view gets you scanning in seconds; a detailed view shows the preview and all settings side by side. Older systems keep the classic macOS scan interface.
  • new Decide where each scan goes with a single checkbox: leave it off for a fresh document every time, or turn it on to add pages to the document you are already working on.
  • new Two new compression presets, Grayscale and Black & White, shrink scanned documents even further - ideal for pure text scans, where files often end up a fraction of their previous size.
  • new Automate PDFify with App Shortcuts: compress a PDF, make it searchable with OCR, convert it to PDF/A, read out its text, or export the text as JSON - straight from Spotlight, the Shortcuts app, or Siri, without opening the app.
  • new See at a glance whether the open document is PDF/A right in the status bar (for example "PDF/A-1b").
  • new Fit imported images into more page sizes: A3, A5, US Legal, and Tabloid in addition to A4 and US Letter.
  • new Compression never enlarges a document: if a preset cannot make a file smaller, PDFify simply keeps the original. A new per-preset "Guard" option in Settings (on by default) lets you switch this safeguard off for a preset when you want it applied unconditionally.
  • new Join the beta program right from the General settings to keep receiving early versions even after installing a regular release - and leave again anytime by turning the option off. (Not available in the App Store version.)
  • upd Smoother scanning throughout: your scanner is selected automatically when only one is connected, live status shows the page count and lamp warm-up, and there is a helpful hint for Fujitsu ScanSnap users.
  • upd Faster, smaller compression: Black & White pages are now stored as true black-and-white images for dramatically smaller files, and applying a compression no longer takes an extra pass just to measure the result.
  • upd The support form now lets you capture and attach a screenshot with a single click, always attaches the log files, and offers a button to re-attach them.
  • fix More reliable connections to network and Wi-Fi scanners, with a clear explanation and a "Try Again" button when a scanner cannot be opened.
  • fix Black & white and full-page scans now work on many more scanners, and the resolution you choose is always honored for crisp results.
  • fix The built-in compression presets now shrink documents reliably while keeping text readable, and Grayscale and Black & White compression keep your document searchable and selectable.
  • fix Compression no longer enlarges files - including OCR through the quick action and already small or well-compressed PDFs, in the app and through the Finder quick action and Shortcuts alike.
  • fix Cancelling a scan now stops it right away instead of leaving the progress indicator spinning.
  • fix Importing certain JPG photos from Apple Photos (such as cropped or HDR shots) no longer fails or produces a blank page.
  • fix Text recognition with the alternative OCR engine no longer freezes partway through and now completes reliably.
